How to install the lastest deb version (or deb file) of Kvirc

Print

For the Ubuntu Open Week (more information), you might need an IRC client. Kvirc is a good one (amongst others, of course).

The one you find in the ubuntu repositories (as of intrepid) is version 3.4.0, you can find a deb file on their webiste that is version 3.4.2 RC2, but if you install the deb directly, this won't work. Here's what you have to do:

Open a terminal, and type:

sudo apt-get build-dep kvirc

This will install the dependencies for Kvirc.

Then download the latest deb file from ftp://ftp.kvirc.de/pub/kvirc/snapshots/ubuntu/

And install it using Gdeb (use Open with Gdeb, if you use firefox, or double click on the deb file in nautilus).

To start it, use the ALT+F2 shortcut to bring the application launcher, and type "kvirc" (without the quotes), and hit Enter.

You should get this (after a quick installation wizard):
